Community Update: HB 1237 – Mascot Bill Good morning, HB 1237 passed out of committee this morning along party lines. A new amendment filed yesterday would extend the bill’s effective date to July 1, 2026. However, the bill’s sponsor declined to include a provision that would allow schools using "banned" mascots to partner with a federally recognized tribe and, with that tribe’s consent, continue using the mascot and logo. The bill now moves to the House floor for a full vote. The opportunity to submit witness slips has closed. If you haven’t already done so, I strongly encourage you to contact your Representative and let them know your opinion regarding the "mascot" bill. If the bill passes the House this week, it will advance to the Senate for further consideration. At this point, it’s unclear whether there is interest in moving the bill in that chamber. We expect to learn more once the Senate returns from break on Tuesday, April 29. Thank you for staying engaged. Please continue to make your voices heard.

📢 Community Update: Referendum Results & Next Steps We want to thank everyone who took the time to vote in the recent school referendum. While the final results are not in, it looks like we were incredibly close—just 8 votes shy of passing—we remain committed to supporting our students, staff, and school. Moving forward, we will sell bonds that will generate just under a year’s worth of local tax dollars. At the same time, we will reevaluate our budget and make difficult but necessary decisions regarding potential budget cuts. We will continue to be excellent stewards of the tax payers’ funds, finding ways to provide a quality education on a diminishing local tax base from the 1980’s. This is not the end of the conversation. In two years, we anticipate bringing the referendum question back to the ballot, giving our community another opportunity to invest in the future of our school, and your community. Your engagement and support are vital, and we encourage continued dialogue as we navigate these next steps together. Thank you for being part of this journey.

Dear Parent, Beginning February 18th, students across Illinois are required to complete the eleventh annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This is a requirement that is part of our determination for our Summative Designation. Less than 100% participation on this survey by students in 4th -8th grade results in fewer points towards our summative designation. This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of your child’s school. As a parent/guardian, this opportunity will allow you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness in a survey about your child’s school. On behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, the 5Essentials Survey will be administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are: • Effective Leaders • Collaborative Teachers • Involved Families • Supportive Environments • Ambitious Instruction Prior research in more than 400 schools has shown that schools that were strong on at least three of these “5Essential” indicators were 10 times more likely to improve student learning gains in math and reading than those that were weak on three or more Essentials. All teachers and fourth through 12th grade students will be responding to this survey. 5Essentials Reports will be generated for schools if their teachers and/or students meet the response rate threshold of 50 percent. These reports will be sent to schools and districts in May and will also be included in the State School Report Card. Additionally, your district has chosen to provide the optional supplement parent survey. If at least 20 percent of Thomasboro CCSD #130 parents/guardians complete this survey, a parent report will also be generated. The parent data will not be included on the State Report Card. Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide improvement. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child. The Illinois 5Essentials Survey for students and teachers will be conducted February 18th- March 28th. The Parent Survey Supplement will be conducted during that same period. To take the survey please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ and select the appropriate survey to begin. For more information about the Illinois 5Essentials Survey, or to view previous years’ Reports, please visit https://www.5-essentials.org/illinois. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at the school, 217-643-3275. Sincerely, Mrs. McArthur
