Open Meetings Act

All Illinois school boards are subject to the Open Meetings Act.

     1. The Act makes it public policy that

          (a) public bodies shall act and deliberate openly,
          (b) citizens shall be given advance notice of, and the right to attend, all meetings, and
         (c) the citizen’s right to know shall be protected.

Meetings are to be open and the Act’s limited exceptions allowing closed sessions are to be “strictly construed.”
Certification must occur by January 1, 2012.
